Economics of Software Product Lines
نویسنده
چکیده
Software Product Lines (SPL) offer tremendous potential to improve a company’s competitive position and responsiveness to changing market needs. However, unless the full benefits and costs are well understood by executive-level stakeholders, the probability of success will be low. An SPL economic analysis framework is presented that is based on the author’s experience with SPL adoption at Convergys. While derived from the Convergys experience, it is hoped that this framework will be of value to other companies contemplating a transition to an SPL.

Successful Product Line Engineering : A Case Study 1
The economics of software motivates approaches to reduce the cost of development and life-cycle maintenance of software systems. One approach to reducing cost is to create a product line, a group of similar products structured to take advantage of each other’s assets. Product lines epitomize reuse. Experience is showing that a technical approach alone is not sufficient to produce a successful p...
متن کاملTowards Identifying Evolution Smells in Software Product Lines
As more and more companies shift to a product line approach, supporting the evolution of software product lines becomes increasingly important. While today already significant work exists along the lines of quality analysis for software product lines, there is much less work that addresses the evolution scenario. In this paper, we briefly describe different categories of approaches for identify...
متن کاملFormal Methods in Software Product Lines: Concepts, Survey, and Guidelines
Based upon our survey of the literature, software product lines is a fertile research field for the application of formal methods. Most computer scientists and software practitioners, including software product lines researchers, are not exploiting the powerful tools and techniques available in modern formal methods. This paper (i) summarizes the core of modern applied formal methods, (ii) disc...

We propose a framework for analyzing transformations of the demand facing a monopolist. Our approach is based on the observation that such transformations frequently stem from changes in the dispersion of consumers’ valuations, which lead to rotations of the demand curve. In a wide variety of settings, profits are a U-shaped function of dispersion. The monopolist will adopt a mass-market postur...
متن کاملTool Support for Software Variability Management and Product Derivation in Software Product Lines
Software variability management is a key challenge in developing software product lines and deriving products from the product line. In order to provide effective variability management and product derivation in software product lines, which is capable of being automated, certain fundamental building blocks are required. These include multiple product line views, the feature model as the unifyi...
